Meet Shannon!

Why I chose to attend the University of Minnesota Twin Cities:
As a First Generation and Transfer student, I had never considered a four year institution as an option until a professor had visited a wellness course I had attended at Normandale Community College to discuss Nutrition. I was on the path for Pharmacy school at the time and thought this was a great route to pursue my goals. The University of Minnesota was not only where that professor was home to but also where one of the top ranking and closest nutrition programs were to home so that I could continue to support my loved ones. Once I was on campus, this revolutionized the way that I viewed life and I am so grateful for the way that this experience helped me to get to know myself at a higher level, to explore my true passions, to build strong connections for lifelong support, and to set myself up for success.

Favorite U of M Memory:
During my time as a student, I had been involved in research through our Crop Research Center and my studies focused on a relative of the sunflower: Silphium Integrifolium, or Rosinweed which was being explored to support options for sunflower oil sources. Being surrounded in these beautiful flowers, the peace of campus, and watching bumblebees crash goofily into flowers as they polinate will forever be my favorite.

Favorite Random Fact about the University:
UMN faculty have developed 21+ apple varieties, and this number keeps growing!

The One Experience Students Shouldn’t Miss:
Check in and talk to someone in at least 1 community center, even if it isn't your jam. We have so many truly amazing communities, it can be surprising how having this support can help beyond what may have been imagined. It can also be intimidating but trust me, showing up is always the hardest part.
