The College of Science and Engineering (CSE) offers 20 bachelor's degree programs, including 12 engineering specialties. Its programs are ranked among the best in this country with several hundred companies recruiting CSE students each year. Admission is selective; to be successful, students should have strong science and mathematics aptitude.

As a CSE student, you'll learn from nationally recognized faculty who are leaders in their fields. You'll also have opportunities to take advantage of special study abroad courses for CSE students, participate in undergraduate research, and gain hands-on leadership experience in student groups and team competitions. In addition, CSE students benefit from the support of academic advisors, career counselors, and student program specialists who are dedicated to the success of all students.

Priority deadlines: The College of Science and Engineering will give full consideration to all applications received and completed by the priority application deadline. Applications received or completed after the priority deadline will be reviewed on a space-available basis. Some programs may close their admissions before the final deadline.

Prerequisite coursework and review criteria:

The following criteria are required for all College of Science and Engineering transfer applicants:

1. Prior to submitting an application, a minimum of three technical courses in at least two different subject areas must be complete with grades posted on a transcript. Advanced Placement scores, International Baccalaureate scores, and/or test credits do not count toward fulfilling this criterion.

2. Prior to enrolling in CSE, the minimum course prerequisites for a student's intended major (listed below) or equivalent courses must be complete. Advanced Placement credit, International Baccalaureate credit, test credits and courses in progress are considered to fulfill this criterion.

*** Physics II (PHYS 1302W) is a recommended prerequisite for Computer Science and Data Science, but other approved lab-based sciences may be substituted. Physics II (PHYS 1302W) is required for Computer Engineering

Many colleges and universities offer courses that are equivalent to the required technical courses. You can explore Technical Course Equivalencies and Transfer Course Plans for individual colleges. Technical courses that receive a grade of D do not transfer to meet College of Science and Engineering degree requirements.

Although your college or university may offer many courses beyond those listed above, it is important to review the four year graduation plan for your intended major to better understand the sequencing and offering of required courses and determine the best time to transfer. Technical GPA: Technical courses are all math and science-based courses beginning with the required prerequisite courses. These courses include, but are not limited to, calculus, calculus-based physics, general chemistry principles, higher-level math and science, engineering, and computer science courses.

For the purposes of admission, an applicant's technical GPA is calculated using all grades of technical courses including original and repeated attempts (referred to as an unbracketed technical GPA).

Most successful applicants to the College of Science and Engineering have a 3.2 or higher technical grade point average (technical GPA), however some programs are more competitive.

Schedule changes: The University expects that students will successfully complete the coursework they list on their admission application. Schedule changes of academic coursework and/or the unsuccessful completion of coursework may result in the cancellation of admission or delay your expected graduation date. Students considering making schedule changes, or those who are concerned about their academic progress in any of their courses, should consult with their U of M admissions counselor (1-800-752-1000 or 612-625-2008).
