COVID-19 update
The University of Minnesota is closely monitoring the emerging, global public health concern involving COVID-19 (the novel coronavirus).
As this issue continues to evolve, our goal in the Office of Admissions is to support applicants and admitted students in impacted areas who may need additional time completing next steps for admission.
For more information and updates related to the virus and our University's response please visit our COVID-19 update page.
For University of Minnesota admission purposes, you are considered an international student if you are not a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or refugee, and if you are on a temporary visa or require a visa to study in the United States.
If you are a U.S. citizen living overseas, or with multiple nationalities (i.e. have dual citizenship) and plan on entering the U.S. on your U.S. passport, you are not considered an international applicant.
Check out the following links before you apply:
You are considered a freshman if you are still a high school student or if you have not enrolled in any college or university courses after graduating from high school.
Students who have registered or enrolled in a postsecondary institution, such as college, university, vocational college or trade school, after completing secondary school are considered transfer applicants for admission purposes.
The University of Minnesota Twin Cities does not partner with third parties (agents or education consultants) to represent the University nor to recruit or enroll international students. Agents may be retained by students and their families to assist them with the application process but these agents are not agents of the University nor do they have a contractual agreement with the University of Minnesota. Students and their families who are interested in the University of Minnesota can request information through our website for prospective international students.
Students interested in becoming medical doctors must first complete an undergraduate degree, then apply for medical school admission. However, the University of Minnesota Medical School applicant eligibility states that they do not accept international applications at this time.
The University of Minnesota Twin Cities does not accept any Chinese summer program credits. We will not transfer any credits completed through programs at Chinese colleges, universities or programs. Visit International Transfer Credits for more information.
