General Requirements for Admission to the University in the Minnesota Cooperative Admissions Program (MnCAP)

Prior to enrolling at the University:

  • Complete the AA degree or the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum.
  • Complete the appropriate prerequisite and introductory courses for your intended major, with grades of C or higher. If you enter the MnCAP program as an undeclared major, you must have declared a major in one of the participating colleges by the time you apply for transfer to the U of M.
  • Meet the priority application deadline for the term you wish to begin.
  • Meet any additional admission conditions for individual U of M colleges, as outlined here.

Styled Content

College of Biological Sciences (CBS)

  • Maintain a preferred cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher. This cumulative GPA includes coursework from all colleges you have attended.
  • Maintain a science GPA of 2.7 or higher. This GPA is calculated using grades from coursework such as general biology, organismal biology, calculus, calculus-based physics, general chemistry, and organic chemistry.
  • Complete one semester of calculus (equivalent to MATH 1271) with grades of C- or higher.
  • Complete one full year of general chemistry with lab (equivalent to CHEM 1061/1065 and 1062/1066) with grades of C- or higher.

College of Continuing and Professional Studies (CCAPS)

Construction Management

  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. This cumulative GPA includes coursework from all colleges you have attended.
  • Applicants must have completed the following courses with a minimum C- grade: Short Course Calculus or Calculus 1 and Physics I with Lab.
  • Recommend completing preparatory courses in Microeconomics, Financial Accounting, either Public Speaking or Interpersonal Communications, and a Technical Writing course.

Health Services Management

  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. This cumulative GPA includes coursework from all colleges you have attended.
  • Applicants must have completed the following courses with a minimum C- grade: Microeconomics, Financial Accounting, Introduction to Statistics, Health/Medical Terminology, and either Public Speaking or Interpersonal Communications.
  • Recommend an Introduction to Psychology or Managerial Psychology course.

Information Technology Infrastructure

  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. This cumulative GPA includes coursework from all colleges you have attended.
  • Applicants must have completed the following courses with a minimum C- grade: Short Course Calculus or Calculus 1, Physics I with Lab, and Introduction to Algorithms and Data Structures.
  • Recommend completing preparatory courses in Microeconomics, Financial Accounting, Introduction to Statistics, either Public Speaking or Interpersonal Communications, and a Technical Writing course.

College of Education and Human Development

  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher (2.75 for Special Education). This cumulative GPA includes coursework from all colleges you have attended
  • Submit CEHD Transfer Application Supplement with admission application
  • Early Childhood applicants - completed developmental psychology with a C- or higher. (Note: minimum GPA of 2.8 is required for admissions to the M.Ed/Initial Licensure Program)
  • Elementary Education Foundations applicants - completed college algebra, earth science, and general psychology prior to admission with grades of C- or higher
  • Family Social Science applicants - complete statistics and public speaking prior to admission with grades of C- or higher
  • Human Resource Development applicants - complete college level math (not logic), general psychology, micro- or macroeconomics, and public speaking with a C- or higher
  • Special Education applicants - maintain a GPA of 2.75 and include 2 letters of recommendation, one from an instructor who can speak to your academic performance 
  • Youth Studies applicants - complete the following: introduction to sociology OR a social science elective prior to admissions, with grades of C- or higher

Note: Early Childhood, Elementary Education Foundations, Family Social Science, Human Resource Development, Special Education and Youth Studies majors only

College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences

  • Successful transfer applicants will have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Successful applicants will have College Algebra (or higher) completed or in progress prior to applying at the U of M.
  • Demonstrate a strong foundation in math and science courses.
  • Applicants to the Applied Economics and Pre-Ag & Food Business Management major must have completed college algebra with a grade of C or higher and must have completed microeconomics or macroeconomics with a grade of B- or higher. Preferred GPA of 2.8 or higher.
  • Applicants to the Nutrition major must have completed one semester or two quarters of inorganic chemistry with lab with a grade of C or higher, and one semester or two quarters of biology with lab with a grade of C or higher. Preferred GPA of 2.8 or higher. If a student has one full year of Chemistry (equivalent to CHEM 1061/1065 and CHEM 1062/1066) then the student is not required to complete General Biology with a lab, prior to admission.
  • Applicants to the Food Science major must have completed one semester or two quarters of inorganic chemistry with lab with a grade of C- or higher, and one semester or two quarters of biology with lab with a grade of C- or higher. Preferred GPA of 2.8 or higher.
  • All applicants who wish to pursue the emphasis of Pre-Vet in the Animal Science major AND intend to apply to Veterinary School must have completed college algebra, one semester (or more) of general chemistry with lab, and one semester of general biology with lab, with grades of B or higher. Preferred cumulative GPA for this emphasis in Animal Science is 3.0 or higher.

College of Liberal Arts

  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher and maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher in courses related to your major. The cumulative GPA requirement includes coursework from all colleges attended.
    • Journalism B.A. and Strategic Communication B.A. majors require a 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Complete the recommended or required prerequisites for certain CLA majors.
  • Pass any auditions or special exams (for applicable music and dance majors) prior to matriculation in CLA.
  • Preference is given to students whose first-choice major is in CLA.
  • Starting fall 2023, Computer Science is no longer an option for this program

College of Science and Engineering

  • Complete the minimum course prerequisites required by the student's intended major.
  • Technical courses are all math and science-based courses beginning with the required prerequisite courses. These courses include, but are not limited to, calculus, calculus-based physics, general chemistry principles, higher-level math and science, engineering, and computer science courses.
  • For the purposes of admission, an applicant's technical GPA is calculated using all grades of technical courses including original and repeated attempts (referred to as an unbracketed technical GPA).
  • Maintain an unbracketed technical GPA or 3.2 or higher.
  • Please note: Students who are currently registered for the MnCAP program with the intent to transfer into an engineering program within CSE are encouraged to contact the CSE MnCAP advisor for more information about their likelihood of admission.

Note: Astrophysics, Chemistry, Earth Science, Mathematics, Physics and Statistics majors only (starting fall 2023, Computer Science is no longer an option for this program)
