International Credits - Recently Admitted/Current Students and Advisors/Staff
This path is for recently admitted/current University of Minnesota Twin Cities students and University of Minnesota Twin Cities advisors/staff submitting international coursework and requires login for submission.
At this time, international courses are only reviewed after a student confirms their enrollment and should NOT be submitted using the course credit review process. For more information, visit the International Transfer Credits page.
Study Abroad: University of Minnesota Twin Cities resident-credit courses are evaluated through the Learning Abroad Center. If you are unsure about the type of credit your course offers, contact [email protected]. If it is a non-affiliated study abroad program, visit Non-Affiliated Study Abroad Program.
If you are transferring credit to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities that is NOT from a study abroad program, follow the steps below.
Step 1: Submit a transcript
Submit your official transcript to the Office of Admissions. The Office of Admissions International unit evaluates coursework of institutions outside of the United States to determine if the institution and coursework are transferable to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and if any courses fulfill Liberal Education (LE) requirements.
If the institution and coursework are transferable, Admissions will post transfer credits on your Transfer Credit Report. This evaluation contains courses that have transferred to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and whether or not any Liberal Education (LE) requirements have been met.
Step 2: Submit a syllabus
Submit your syllabus (with English translation, if appropriate) to determine if your approved transfer course can be used to meet major requirements at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. The syllabus should include a week-by-week outline of assignments and readings as well as textbook information. You may need to include multiple documents to supply this information. (See Course Syllabus.)

A department will review your course and determine if your transfer course is equivalent to a University of Minnesota Twin Cities course.
Step 3: Receive an evaluation decision
Once the department has completed your evaluation, you will be notified of the decision via the email address you entered on the submission form. Your academic record will be updated with equivalency information. This process can take up to approximately 45 business days.
How Courses Are Evaluated
The Office of Admissions
Evaluates your transfer courses to determine:
- If they transfer to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities (see criteria)
- If they meet any of the University's Liberal Education (LE) requirements
If you have questions about a course that is denied transfer or doesn't appear to count toward a Liberal Education (LE) requirement, use Transferology.
Academic Departments
Evaluate transfer courses to determine:
- If your course is a direct course match with a University of Minnesota Twin Cities course; often called an equivalent course.
- If your course fits into a major or minor even though it does not have an equivalent course at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, often called a major elective course.
- If a Religious Studies course will transfer.
Use this process to request departmental review of an individual course from an institution within the United States.
Note: Please submit University of Minnesota System Campus courses through the Current Student tab. You can now use Transferology to check to see if a course has already been reviewed for transfer.
Transfer Credit Evaluation
Transfer coursework is evaluated by different University offices. The following information is meant to help you determine whether you need to submit a course to be reviewed by the Office of Admissions or an academic department. Visit the TES Transfer Guides for more information about previously-established equivalencies.
Why does understanding this help me?
Understanding how your transfer courses or standardized exams apply to your University of Minnesota degree can help you plan your path to graduation.
