Freshman Academic Scholarships With Separate Application

Achieve Scholarship Program
The Achieve Scholarship is funded by the state of Minnesota and is awarded to select Minnesota residents who attend an eligible public or private college in Minnesota. High school graduates who complete any one of four sets of courses defined as rigorous earn a one-time scholarship scholarship ranging from $1,200 - $4,022 to help pay for college at a public or private university or college. State Indian/Tribal Scholarships
American Indian students with at least one-fourth Indian ancestry and membership in a federally recognized tribe may be eligible for these scholarships through their tribal agency office or the Minnesota State Indian Scholarship Program (Minnesota residency required). For info, call: 612/624-2555.
Wallin Scholarship
Minneapolis public high school students are eligible to be considered for the Wallin Scholarship. Decisions are based on academic achievement, academic potential as determined by high school counselor and teacher recommendations, community involvement, contribution to diversity, and demonstrated financial need. Recipients are selected by high school committees appointed by the Wallin Foundation. Other scholarships administered by the Wallin Foundation include Eric Scholars, Cornwell Scholars, and McCary Scholars. For more information, please contact Lourdes Cancel Rodriguez at 612-625-8524.
ROTC scholarships
Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) scholarships provide up to four years of eligibility and may include graduate school programs. ROTC scholarships provide financial assistance paying tuition costs, other instructional fees, and textbook expenses for students enrolled in Army, Air Force, or Navy ROTC. Additionally, scholarship students receive $250-$400 per month during the school year.

ROTC scholarships are competitive, and awardees are selected at either the national or local level. The scholarship programs and associated benefits vary by each branch of service. For more information about ROTC programs and scholarships, contact:

Social Fraternity Scholarships
Each year the individual social fraternities and the University of Minnesota Interfraternity Council (IFC) offer scholarships to incoming freshmen men. These scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic achievement, leadership, and other criteria. Many fraternities offering scholarships require an interview in addition to a separate application. Though affiliating with a fraternity is not a requirement to receive a scholarship, the application process is a great way to meet current U of M students and to get a glimpse of fraternity and sorority life. Ethel Curry American Indian Scholarship

Students who are at least one-fourth American Indian and who present written documentation of tribal enrollment and blood quantum and demonstrate involvement in American Indian community and culture may be considered for this scholarship (varies, renewable for up to four years). Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship, $6,000/year for 4 years
The Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship application is web-based and can be found on the Jackie Robinson Foundation site. Factors taken into consideration include demonstrated academic achievement, contribution to diversity, and evidence of leadership potential. For more information, call 612/624-0594.
The Ron Brown Scholar Program

The Ron Brown Scholar program seeks to identify African-American high school seniors who will make significant contributions to society. Applicants must excel academically, exhibit exceptional leadership potential, participate in community service activities, and demonstrate financial need. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen or hold a permanent resident visa card.

Each year, a minimum of 10 students will be designated Ron Brown Scholars and will receive $10,000 annually for four years, for a total of $40,000. The recipients may use the renewable scholarships to attend an accredited four-year college or university of their choice within the United States, including the University of Minnesota.

Puckett Scholars Program

The Puckett Scholars Program was created in 1994 by Kirby and Tonya Puckett to provide scholarships for incoming freshmen students from Minnesota. Preference is given to students who demonstrate contribution to diversity, strong academic performance, leadership and/or community involvement, financial need, and high academic potential. Scholarship recipients will receive $4,000 for the first year, renewable annually for up to four years. In addition, merit awards of $1,000 - $2,000 are given annually to scholars who maintain outstanding grade point averages.

The Annexstad Family Foundation Scholarship

The Foundation was established by Al and Cathy Annexstad and their family to provide financial support for higher education to deserving students who have matured through the Big Brothers Big Sisters program in Minnesota.

A successful candidate will be a student who has shown outstanding performance in high school, with special emphasis placed on academic achievement, character, and qualities of leadership while demonstrating financial need. The student must have matured as a "Little" through the Big Brothers Big Sisters program in Minnesota and be accepted for admission to the University of Minnesota.

The Annexstad Family Foundation's goal is to provide funds for tuition, fees, room, board and books. The amount of the scholarship will be based upon the individual family circumstances of the student and the availability of resources from the Annexstad Family Foundation.

Alpha Kappa Psi scholarships

Alpha Kappa Psi, a co-educational professional business fraternity, offers scholarships to incoming freshmen admitted to the Carlson School of Management. These scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic achievement, leadership, and other criteria. Students admitted to the Carlson School of Management are encouraged to visit the Alpha Kappa Psi Web site for more information and application details.

Other outside scholarships
We encourage you to seek out scholarships that may be available in your home community. Civic groups, churches, businesses, and other non-University of Minnesota agencies offer many scholarships to students beginning college. Listings of these scholarships are available in the reference sections of your high school or public library. You can use a free national scholarship database search service called Fast Web. You can also search the University's One Stop Grant and Scholarship Resources website for other grants and scholarships for which you may be eligible to apply.
