Land-Grant Legacy Scholars

The Land-Grant Legacy Scholars Program (LGLS) was created to support students from Greater Minnesota with diverse backgrounds and characteristics who are admitted to the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS). Incoming freshmen who are admitted to CFANS will be automatically considered for the Land-Grant Legacy Scholars Program.

LGLS offers additional support to benefit students academically, personally through programming, and financially with a scholarship to help make a U of M education possible.

Benefits of the Land-Grant Legacy Scholars Program

Scholarly community and enrichment programming

LGLS students participate in monthly programming designed for personal and professional development, such as workshops, networking opportunities, and more. In addition, students are required to live in a University residence hall during their first year and are specifically encouraged to live in Bailey Hall or a Living Learning Community.

One-on-one professional advising

LGLS students have access to a specialized LGLS Program Coordinator who will be there to support all aspects of life as a U of M student. Students meet one-on-one with them each semester to receive support and guidance as they navigate the challenges and opportunities of a rigorous college experience. Students also meet individually with their CFANS academic advisor each semester

Academic enrichment

LGLS students participate in the Dean’s Engaged Leaders Program (CFAN 1101) as part of their first-year curriculum, which is designed to develop leadership skills in academic, social, and community engagement contexts.

Scholarship support

Students selected for this program will receive a Land-Grant Legacy Scholarship worth $20,000 ($5,000 annually for four years). This scholarship is awarded to help students focus on their academic studies during their undergraduate career and ensure they successfully complete their CFANS degree.

Land-Grant Legacy Scholars Program Selection Process

Students admitted to CFANS as incoming freshmen who are from greater Minnesota (students from outside the seven-county metro area) will be considered for the Land-Grant Legacy Scholars Program. Students selected to participate in LGLS demonstrate an interest in food, agriculture, and/or natural resources and are required to participate in all programmatic elements of the Land-Grant Legacy Scholars Program.
