Diana Xuan Fu, an honors student in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota, has been named a 2006 Rhodes Scholar. She is the third University of Minnesota student to win a Rhodes Scholarship since 2000.

Fu is the third University of Minnesota student to win a Rhodes Scholarship since 2000.Fu, who is majoring in global studies and political science, will graduate summa cum laude in May 2006. The Rhodes Scholarship will enable her to study for two years at the University of Oxford in England, where she intends to earn a master's degree in development studies.

Fu was born in China and graduated from Eden Prairie High School in Minnesota. She began her studies at the U of M in 2002.

"We congratulate Diana on her spectacular achievement and, of course, take immense pride that she is a student in the College of Liberal Arts," said Steven J. Rosenstone, the college's dean. "Diana's high academic achievement, integrity of character, and leadership ability distinguish her."

While at the University, Fu has been a regular columnist at The Minnesota Daily, and her column is well-known on campus and nationwide. The Minnesota Daily is the nation's largest student-run newspaper, and her column has recently included her observations about forms of discrimination that she observed in Beijing, China.

While Fu keeps very busy writing for the newspaper and working on her double-major in global studies and political science, she still finds time to explore other opportunities. In fact, she's had an essay printed in a textbook called America Now. She has also published short fiction and poetry, and has danced in the performance "Sun and Moon" at the Southern Theatre.

Like over 20 percent of U of M graduates, Fu has also studied abroad. While at Beijing University last year, she had internships with two Chinese nonprofit organizations: the Center for Women's Law Studies and Legal Services and the Migrant Women's Home.
