Freshmen Attend Convocation Ceremony

Celebrating the start of their college careers, members of the Class of 2008 attended New Student Convocation on Tuesday, September 7.

Northrop Memorial Auditorium buzzed with Golden Gopher spirit as students experienced many traditions for the first time: University professors paraded into the auditorium in formal academic procession and students belted out The Minnesota Rouser with our Members of the Marching Band Flagline perform on the lawn of Coffman Memorial Union during New Student Convocation.308-member marching band.

"Convocation was very exciting and welcoming," said freshman Krissy Wills. "It made me feel a part of the U of M, even on my first day!"

President Bruininks, along with other faculty and staff, extended a warm welcome into the University's distinguished academic community. Students celebrated friendship and community as they set out together on a four-year adventure.

The convocation ceremony is presented by Orientation & First-Year Programs (OFYP), a department designed to engage new students in campus life. Much like the New Student Weekend retreat, Convocation is just one more way for students to get connected and experience the traditions and excitement of a diverse and dynamic campus.
