International application checklist
The following items are required to complete your application. We are not able to review your application until these items are received. Be sure to submit these required items by the appropriate deadline.
- Completed Application for Admission.
- $55 U.S. nonrefundable application fee.
If you apply online, you may pay the fee using a credit card. If you would prefer, you may submit payment in the form of a bank draft drawn on a U.S. bank or an international postal money order, with the fee payable to the University of Minnesota. Do not send cash. The application fee cannot be waived. (If you apply as a non-degree seeking student, you do not need to submit the application fee.)
- Official transcripts and official English translations of your transcripts.
If you have not yet graduated from high school/secondary school, your transcript must include your most recent year of courses with grades (equivalent to the 11th year of high school in the U.S.). If you have graduated from high school/secondary school, your final school transcript must include your grades through the end of your last year in school (equivalent to the 12th year of high school in the U.S.) and your year of graduation. If you were also issued a graduation certificate or leaving examination results, we must also receive an official copy of this document.
Arrange to have your official college transcripts submitted directly to the Office of Admissions. If you are applying for fall semester and are currently attending school, your transcript must include grades for the requested fall term and a list of your spring courses in progress. If you are applying for spring semester and are currently attending school, your transcript must include grades for the requested spring term and a list of your fall courses in progress. (If grades are not yet available, please send them as soon as they are available.)
All documents not issued in English must be in the original language and include a certified true English translation. (Official documents are those that are original or are attested copies of original academic documents that are mailed in a sealed, stamped envelope directly from your secondary school or college or university.)
- Supplemental application(s) - FOR TRANSFER APPLICANTS ONLY.
If you are a transfer applicant (i.e. you are attending or have attended a postsecondary or university-level school after graduating from secondary school,) a supplemental application is required for the Carlson School of Management, College of Design, College of Education and Human Development, Dental Hygiene, Dental Therapy, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, or Nursing. Supplemental applications are available on our Forms page.
- Test scores.
If your native language is not English, a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language,) MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery,) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score is required. (Note: Transfer applicants who have successfully completed at least 26 or more transferable semester credits at a college or university in the United States, or in a country where English is the first official language, may not be required to submit English proficiency exam scores. If we need English scores from you, we will notify you after we make an initial assessment of your application.)
If you have completed less than one year of postsecondary studies, the SAT or ACT examination is strongly recommended (and required for student athletes).

If you are admitted to the University of Minnesota, you will be required to submit a Financial Certification form when you confirm your enrollment. We will not be able to issue an I-20 without this documentation. You will have the opportunity to submit this information with an online form if you are admitted.
