How to apply
You can apply online, download an application to print, or contact us to request a paper application. These admission applications are for all international students, both freshmen and transfers.
You will also need to submit one of the following:

Things to remember
To avoid delays in the processing of your application, please note the following:
- Make sure the name on your application matches the name on your transcripts and the name that will appear on your passport
- Make sure you provide your permanent home address in your country of citizenship
- Be sure to check the box for your gender on the application form (the ethnicity categories are optional)
- The date of birth is required for international students
- Provide a valid email address as we will use this to contact you
Application checklist
Please submit the following items to complete your application:
A completed web application or the paper application form signed and dated.
You must complete all sections of the application.
A $45 U.S. nonrefundable application fee.
The fee should be payable to the University of Minnesota in the form of a bank draft drawn on a U.S. bank or an international postal money order. Do not send cash. Click here for a fee payment form and information. The application fee cannot be waived. (If you apply as a non-degree seeking student using the paper form, you need not submit the application fee.)
Official transcripts and official English translations of your transcripts.
Transcripts of coursework and grades are required for four years of secondary school study and from all postsecondary schools attended. An official transcript is one that contains the official stamp or seal of the school or is certified as official by the school, a U.S. embassy or consulate official, or other recognized international official. If you complete secondary school in a country where a secondary leaving examination is required for university entry, you will be required to provide us with the results of this examination.
Test scores.
If your native language is not English, a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score is required. If you have studied for two years in a country where English is the first official language the English testing requirement may be waived. If you have less than one year of postsecondary studies, the SAT or ACT examination is strongly recommended (and required for student athletes).

Financial certification statement.
If you will require an I-20 form for a student visa, you must show you have sufficient funds to cover at least the first year (12 months) of study in the U.S. The figures on the Financial Certification Statement are not negotiable. These forms are available at the top of this page.
