The College of Liberal Arts (CLA) provides outstanding education for successful lives and careers. CLA graduates are leaders across a broad spectrum of human endeavors, in fields such as law, medicine, government, business, education, public relations and marketing, the arts, and international relations. CLA students may choose from more than 60 majors in the social sciences, arts, humanities, and natural sciences, and enhance their career preparation with internships in a wide range of organizations.

Students who seek more flexibility may create innovative interdisciplinary programs--for example, combining economics, a language, geography, political science, speech-communication, and global studies to prepare for a career in international business. Many CLA departments rank among the best in the nation, with nationally recognized faculty bringing to their students the leading-edge knowledge of their disciplines, as well as a commitment to teaching that has earned them many teaching awards.

Admission Criteria

Students are considered for admission based on an individual review of their application, including key factors such as grade point average, grade trends, prerequisite course grades and completion patterns, high school grades, ACT or SAT scores, and residency status.

Priority admission consideration is given to applicants who intend to graduate from CLA. Applicants who meet this condition and who have completed at least 26 semester credits of transferable college coursework at the time of application will be considered for admission based on their college academic record. High school graduates who have completed less than a full year of college coursework at the time of application will be considered for admission using a combination of transfer and freshman admission criteria (high school and college transcripts and ACT or SAT scores will be reviewed). Please note that the CLA freshman class for fall 2008 had an average high school rank of 86.2 percent, an average ACT composite score of 26.3, and an average SAT 1 total of 1241.

Most majors offer admission for any student admitted to CLA. Some majors have additional admission requirements: students applying to majors in Music, Dance, and Acting will have to pass an audition in order to be admitted to their intended major. Some majors are more competitive and may require higher grades and specific courses for admission. For details, review the online Undergraduate Catalog at http://www.catalogs.umn.edu/ug/cla/index.html.

Students in the following categories are considered for admission to CLA on a space-available basis:

  • Undecided majors with fewer than 60 credits at the time of entrance to CLA. Students with more than 60 credits cannot be considered unless they intend to graduate from CLA.
  • Students who wish to enroll in CLA to complete prerequisites for a degree program outside of Liberal Arts (e.g. Biology, Education, Health Sciences, IT, Management). Students must have fewer than 60 semester credits completed when the enter CLA in order to be admitted to complete prerequisites. Students with 60 or more credits can only be admitted to CLA if they indicate a CLA major and plan to complete a bachelor's degree in CLA. Students with a previous bachelor's degree who wish to complete prerequisites for graduate or professional school should enroll as non-degree seeking students through the College of Continuing Education. Non-degree students may be eligible for limited financial aid if they can demonstrate that they are registering for courses required for admission to a professional program. Contact the College of Continuing Education for more information.
  • Students who indicate major choices outside CLA on their application. When students list multiple major choices, they are reviewed for admissibility to all choices. Students may not be admitted if they are not strong candidates to all choices indicated on the application.
