How do I apply for scholarships?
To be considered for University-wide scholarships, simply submit the application for freshman admission. There is no separate application! Admitted freshmen are considered for these University-wide scholarships based on an overall assessment of their admission application.
Priority scholarship consideration is given to students whose complete admission applications are received by the December 15 priority application deadline. Those who apply after that date will be considered on a funds-available basis, though it is unlikely that funds will be available at that time. Students receiving scholarships will be notified by the end of March of their senior year.
A few University scholarships, such as those offered by the College of Liberal Arts, require a separate application, which will be available in the fall. You may also contact the Office of Admissions at 612-625-2008 or 1-800-752-1000 with any questions.
What is the next step?
If you haven't already done so, apply for admission. Priority consideration for academic scholarships is given to students who apply for freshman admission by the December 15 priority application deadline. Those who apply after that date are considered on a funds-available basis.
When will I hear if I am awarded an academic scholarship?
Award notices will be sent to recipients by the end of March of their senior year.
Are scholarships available for freshmen who are admitted for spring semester?
We're sorry, but because of limited scholarship funds, academic scholarships are only available for new freshmen who are admitted and enroll in the fall semester.
Will there be additional opportunities to apply for scholarships after my freshman year?
Yes. Contact your college and academic department to inquire about scholarship opportunities for continuing students. Several scholarships are offered to enrolled students each year. You can also visit http://www.onestop.umn.edu/onestop/Financial_Aid/grants.html for additional scholarship information.
Are there scholarships for transfer students?
Scholarships for transfer students are handled by the student's college or department. For details, you should contact your college of interest.
Are scholarships available for international students?
The University of Minnesota offers a limited number of Global Excellence Scholarships for incoming freshmen and transfer international students. These competitive scholarships cover the full difference between resident and non-resident tuition rates and 50% of the difference between resident and non-resident tuition rates. No separate scholarship application is required. Students are considered for these awards based on an overall assessment of the admission application.
International students are not eligible to apply for U.S. state and federal financial aid programs. Most of the international undergraduates enrolled on our campus are supported by personal or family funds or by scholarships or loans from their home country or private agencies. Some students do receive limited scholarships, but they must still be able to cover all other expenses. If you are unable to pay your expenses at the University at this time, we urge you to delay your application until you are able to do so.
