General requirements for admission to the University in the Minnesota Cooperative Admissions Program (MnCAP)

Prior to enrolling at the University, you should do the following:

  • Complete the AA degree or the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum
  • Complete the appropriate prerequisite and introductory courses for your intended major, with grades of C or higher. If you enter the MnCAP program as an undeclared major, you must have declared a major in one of the participating colleges by the time you apply for transfer to the U of M.
  • Meet the priority application deadline for the term you wish to begin.
  • Meet any additional conditions for individual U of M colleges, as outlined here.

Additional requirements for admission to colleges in the Minnesota Cooperative Admissions Program (MnCAP)

College of Biological Sciences (CBS)

  • Maintain a preferred cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. This cumulative GPA includes coursework from all colleges you have attended.
  • Complete one semester of each of the following with a grade of C or higher: calculus, chemistry, and biology. Students are strongly encouraged to meet with the CBS transfer adviser to help plan their transfer. Please visit the CBS web site for more information about transfer credit.

College of Design (Environmental Design/Landscape Architecture and Housing Studies major only)

  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher. This cumulative GPA includes coursework from all colleges you have attended.
  • Earn grades of C or higher in all transfer courses related to the major.
  • Complete all high school preparation requirements.
  • Submit Admission Application Supplement with admission application.

College of Education & Human Development (Family Social Science major only)

  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher. This cumulative GPA includes coursework from all colleges you have attended.
  • Earn grades of C or higher in all transfer courses related to the major.
  • Complete intermediate algebra with a grade of C or higher prior to admission.
  • Complete at least one social science course prior to admission (general psychology preferred)
  • Submit Admission Application Supplement with admission application.

College of Food, Agricultural & Natural Resource Sciences

  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. This cumulative GPA includes coursework from all colleges you have attended.
  • Demonstrate a strong foundation in math and science courses.
  • Applicants to the Applied Economics and Pre-Ag & Food Business Management major must have completed college algebra with a grade of C or higher and must have completed microeconomics or macroeconomics with a grade of B- or higher.
  • Applicants to the Nutrition major must have completed one semester or two quarters of inorganic chemistry with lab with a grade of C+ or higher, and one semester or one quarter of biology with lab with a grade of C+ or higher.

College of Liberal Arts (CLA)

  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. This cumulative GPA includes coursework from all colleges you have attended (note that the GPA requirement for Journalism & Mass Communication and for Computer Science majors is higher than 2.5)
  • Complete a second semester of a foreign language (for students who plan to pursue a BA, BFA in Art, or BIS degree).
  • Pass any auditions or special exams (for music and dance majors) prior to matriculation in CLA.

Institute of Technology (IT)

  • Maintain a cumulative "technical" GPA that is required for admission to the major you intend to pursue. You can access this information here.
